Blogs and articles
Solomon Islands Climate Action Network (SICAN) and its member organisations will contribute blogs, opinion pieces and articles about climate change in Solomon Islands to this page. We welcome guest contributions, particularly from women, youth and people with disabilities, from all provinces of Solomon Islands.
Blogs will also be uploaded to the SICAN Facebook page (link here) where we welcome you to comment and provide feedback.
First Blog Post: Welkam lo Klaemet Storis!
1 May 2020
The Solomon Islands Climate Action Network (SICAN) was formed in May 2019, with the support of Oxfam Australia and funding through the Pacific Climate Change Collaboration Influence Learning (PACCCIL) project. As part of SICAN's key objective to raise awareness about climate change in Solomon Islands and to advocate for effective action on climate change, SICAN members have developed Klaemet Storis.

The intention is for Klaemet Storis to be an accessible, inclusive digital hub for climate change information. The website is targeted at Solomon Islanders of all ages, from all provinces, including women, children, and people with disabilities, who are often disproportionately affected by climate change and natural disasters.
To be accessible and inclusive, it is also important for members of Solomon Islands communities to be able to contribute to the website. Climate change is affecting Solomon Islanders across all provinces of the country. In response, a number of activities are happening in terms of climate change in Solomon Islands. There are projects in climate adaptation (adapting and building resilience to reduce the negative effects of climate change, like the Climate Resilient Honiara project is supporting). There are also climate mitigation projects (activities which reduce carbon emissions like the Tina River Hydropower project on Guadalcanal, or remove/sequester carbon from the atmosphere like the Sasaboe project in Choiseul).
So we want to hear from you! If you have been involved in any climate change activities - workshops, meetings, community discussions, trainings, developments - then Klaemet Storis is the perfect place to share that knowledge. If you have read interesting things, seen cool videos, or heard some great podcasts or radio shows about climate change, then lots of other people could benefit from sharing it on this platform.
We also strongly value the contribution of traditional or kastom knowledge to the climate change field. Solomon Islanders, and people of other Large Ocean States, have a longstanding connection with their environment and how it changes over time. This means kastom knowledge can offer a lot to climate change activities, policy, and decision-making. A lot of kastom storis reflect the strong link between Solomon Islanders and their land and ocean environments, and can inform how society can adapt to changing environmental and climate conditions. SICAN strives to capture this knowledge on our Kastom Storis page - so if you have any storis, or examples of kastom knowledge in the environmental realm, we would love to hear them.
We are also keen to link this website with social media platforms, so feel free to check out SICAN's Facebook page here, plus one of our members' project Facebook pages - Climate Resilient Honiara - here.
Finally, if you have any questions about this website, or SICAN, please feel free to email our network coordinator on [email protected].
